WHAT TO WEAR ON YOUR OFF-ROAD ADVENTURE
Recently, the Polaris Outlanding Project team ventured across Iceland with nothing but their camping equipment and the side-by-side off-road vehicles- stripping things back to basics for an adventure filled with nature and beauty – but that doesn’t mean their KIT was basic.
If you’re wondering how to pack for an off-road adventure in Iceland (or anywhere else for that matter…) then you’re in luck! They’ve shared their top clothing picks and advice on how to layer-up, below…
LAYER 1: BASE LAYERS
The layer closest to your body: Underwear, base layers, socks. Primarily, this keeps you warm and acts as a second skin, regulating your body temperature.
It should have a snug fit (not too tight), be able to wick moisture away and preferably be made with bamboo, wool or synthetic materials. Avoid cotton because it absorbs moisture and isn’t effective at insulating when damp.
We recommend:
POLARIS MIDWEIGHT BASE LAYERS: Two-piece made with polyester for lasting wear and moisture-wicking properties, with added spandex for stretch and easy movement. There’s a brushed lining designed to feel cosy against the skin. The top has thumb loops that allow for easy dressing when adding more layers, and the leggings have a padded back waistband for extra comfort when riding. Available for men and women.
LAYER 2: MID-LAYERS
Insulated garments that you wear over your base layers for added insulation of body heat. You can layer up your mid-layers depending on how cold the conditions are, and it’s always good to wear more than you need, as you can always take some off when you get too hot. The insulation of the mid layer comes from the air that the material contains – look for layers like puffer jackets and woolly jumpers.
Top tip: Down jackets aren’t good when wet – they don’t heat well, are heavy and take a long time to dry – make sure that it’s waterproof or have a waterproof layer ready to put over the jacket on wet days!
We recommend:

LAYER 3 - SHELL LAYERS
Technical outer garments protect you from the wind and rain, whilst evaporating moisture and retaining heat from the layers beneath. Things to look out for include its water column rating (i.e. how much water pressure the fabric can withstand before it lets water in, as well as its breathability, and handy features like having a hood, waterproof pockets, sizing (so you can make sure all your layers will fit underneath) and ventilation features.
