Polaris Ranger meets the needs of plumbing and farming ventures – and Bertie the Labrador

    1st July, 2025

When John Taylor was looking for a UTV to use for work and to meet the needs of his lifestyle – there was only one option.

He researched what was on the market, what his needs from the vehicle were, and the Polaris Ranger SP 570 came out on top.

John’s local machinery dealer, Peter Ellis Quads in Kendal, Cumbria, also happens to be a Polaris dealer, so the pair worked together to supply the vehicle complete with the extras John needed.

I know the dealer, he is local and has been doing this for a lot of years. Rather than go and see what dealers have, I researched what was out there and knew what I wanted and needed.

“I contacted the dealer to see if he had any second hand. He said no because when somebody has one, they keep them for a long time, so I looked at buying a new one.”

    Build It Feature

John needed an off-road vehicle for his work as a plumbing and heating engineer, for a clay pigeon shooting venture, and walking his Labrador, Bertie, so it had to be adaptable.

“I looked at the website and really like the ‘build it’ feature, when you add extras, you can see them and see what’s happening,” he said.

“When we got ours, we got the full kit and compared to other brands, I prefer the look of the Polaris Ranger.”

John uses the petrol Ranger every day and says he wouldn’t be able to carry out the tasks he does with a quad bike, like his father had done on his farm for many years.

He explains: “We use it for a lot of things. I am a plumbing and heating engineer and a few of my customers are farmers. Some of them want valves on troughs in the fields so it saves us walking across fields to get to those jobs.

“We have a clay pigeon shoot and it is quite a way from the road. We are going off-road and up the fields and that kind of thing. A quad bike would not be stable enough for what we use it for.

“Sometimes my wife goes up walking the dog, with a quad we couldn’t get two people and the dog.”

John opted for heating and a full cab to shield them from the elements while out in the Cumbrian countryside.

Using left over plumbing pipe, cable ties and a sheet of Perspex, John made a cage on the back so even Bertie the black lab can travel in comfort.

With Bertie safely strapped in with a harness, they use the Polaris to travel off-road to one of his favourite walking spots.

John said: “You can’t just put a Labrador on the back of a quad like you can with a sheepdog, but he loves it in the back. He has his head out of the side looking at what is going on.

“I really like it and it is easy to drive. I use it every single day, seven days a week and for a couple of miles every day.”
