How to build a Dirt Nationals Contender

Dirt Nationals is a diverse and exciting off-road series where the top UK teams compete to become the ultimate British Off-Road Champion. Open to all makes and models of off-road vehicles, cars and SXS – including the Polaris RZR – competitors will take on varying terrains and multi-discipline competitions.

Speaking to Rob Butler of Dirt Nationals, he gave a run-down of what makes a good Dirt Nationals contender.

What modifications need to be made in order for vehicles to be race ready?

For the main race specification requirements competitors will need a race specific roll cage, five-point harness seatbelts, battery isolator cut off switch, full coverage side window nets, two AFFF 1.5-litre fire extinguishers, fire-rated race suit, helmet (Snell SA2015 onwards) and a neck brace. It is important to note the neck brace must be a front head restraint type; we do not permit foam doughnut style neck supports.

What modifications can be made?

In addition to the required modifications and safety equipment mentioned, there are other items that can be added. These include items like a front winch for self-recovery, more aggressive tyre patterns, suspension upgrades, bucket seats, just to name a few. There is a huge list of modifications you could make to the vehicle to make your vehicle more competitive. We have a whole range of teams competing at all levels with upgrades from mild to wild!

Why are these changes important?

Depending on the driver and the level at which they are aiming to compete, some modifications are worthwhile investments to improve the strength and durability of your vehicle. Improving the vehicle specs and setup to be more of a competitive racing style, will enhance the speed, agility and overall performance. With the right approach and driver, this can lead to more enjoyable racing and hopefully a higher finish on the podiums.

Are there any limitations to the modifications teams can make?

The only limitation we have in the UTV class is that the tyre size has a maximum height of 32” as well as the factory chassis and factory power plant must be retained. Competitors are free to upgrade and tune the factory motor.

How would you recommend a possible contender go about getting these modifications made?

There are some great suppliers of bolt on race spec roll cages. Polaris Dealer 4 DIRT are a great source of race spec SXS parts off the shelf.
