ASK THE EXPERT: The importance of high and low gear ratio

When operating a Polaris UTV or ATV it is important to know the best drive range to use so you can ensure the vehicle is maximised to its impressive capabilities. Polaris vehicles can operate in either high or low gear ratio thanks to the variable transmission engines.

When to use low gear ratio…

Drive belt slip is responsible for creating excessive heat within the PVT system (Polaris Variable Transmission) which in turn destroys the belts and wears clutch components resulting in very poor or even no performance. Therefore it is important to switch to low range while operating at slower speeds to extend the service life of these components.

Below is a list of the scenarios which may occur and which range Polaris recommends using:

    • Operating at speeds less than 7mph / 11kph: LOW
    • Towing heavy loads: LOW
    • Operating in tough terrain – e.g., steep gradients, boggy areas or snow: LOW
    • Utility use – e.g., plowing: LOW
