In the rugged expanse of the Scottish Highlands, where blanket peat bogs and vertical slopes challenge even the most seasoned outdoorsmen, Niall Rowantree is redefining what is possible in land management.

A third-generation wildlife professional, Rowantree manages over 100,000 acres across Scotland and around the world, relying on a “McLaren-ified” fleet of Polaris vehicles to conduct vital conservation, land management and agricultural work.

Operating an hour north of Inverness in the Rogart area, Rowantree’s work is a complex balancing act of crofting, Shetland cattle farming and professional deer management.

To navigate these remote locations, he partnered with machinery dealer George McLaren of McLaren’s Tractors to create a bespoke utility setup featuring a Polaris Ranger XP 1000 and a Sportsman 570 Black Edition.

For Rowantree, the Polaris Ranger XP 1000, which is equipped with a deluxe cab and has optional Prospector Pro Tracks, has become an apex predator in the world of utility vehicles.

After testing various competitors, Rowantree found the Polaris platform uniquely capable of handling the Highlands’ notorious terrain and blanket peat bogs without leaving a heavy footprint on the landscape.

“It’s been ‘McLaren-ified’ with a custom winch system for recovering deer, floodlights, and roof-mounted work lights. It’s a total gamechanger for getting ourselves out of trouble and getting the job done.”

The vehicle has proven so reliable and comfortable that Rowantree jokes, “To be honest, I struggle to get my wife and daughters out of the Ranger.”

Complementing the heavy-duty Ranger is the Sportsman 570 Black Edition. Outfitted with heated grips and a winch, its standout feature is a drop box on the rear, tailored for the specific demands of deer management and hill farming.

“The Sportsman 570 gives us the exact manoeuvrability we need for the tighter spots,” Rowantree explains. “The drop box is a clever design and it’s a real well done to whoever invented that. It’s a very cleverly thought-out all-rounder. A hell of a thing.”

Rowantree’s reliance on Polaris isn’t just about power; it’s about the mission. As deer populations rise across the UK, Rowantree emphasises modern management is about habitat health rather than just raw numbers. He utilises his Shetland cattle and deer as “selective grazers” to maintain the delicate ecological balance at his farm and follows similar principles across the 11 other properties he oversees.

“Deer management is a fascinating story in the UK right now,” says Rowantree. “Suddenly we’re seeing every field in the UK with deer in them but it’s not about the numbers, it’s about what they are doing to the habitat.

“You need a mix of cattle and deer to work the land sustainably. Having the right tools to access these remote areas allows us to manage these habitats effectively while running wildlife tours and hunting operations.”

George McLaren of McLaren Tractors adds: “I’ve known Niall for a number of years and he works across some of the most challenging terrain you will find anywhere in the UK. He had tried other machines, but stability was always a major issue on the ground he covers.

“He first came to us for the Polaris Sportsman X2 and then added the Ranger Diesel, which we fitted with genuine Polaris tracks through our team. That combination has given him the stability, traction and confidence he needs to get across peat bogs, steep slopes and remote ground safely and effectively.

“For someone like Niall, these vehicles are not just a convenience, they are essential working tools and Polaris has proved itself in conditions where a lot of other machines simply wouldn’t cope.”
